Westgate’s main draw is its location in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego near many restaurants and shops. The hotel has a classic feel with pieces from the Victorian period. Rooms feature imported European furniture, DVD players, bathrobes, slippers and small sitting areas. Floor-to-ceiling windows open to balconies that overlook the harbor. Suites offer additional space and private terraces. Spacious marble bathrooms present showers and small bathtubs, sized for children.
Guests dine in the Westgate Room, open for all meals and serving a range of gourmet dishes. The restaurant is known for its excellent seafood dishes. Sunday brunch is also a must, offering a full dessert bar. A fitness center and a gift shop are both located on the basement level. There is no swimming pool at the hotel; however, Sea World and the San Diego Zoo are not far away.

One of over 120 delegates at a 4 day legal conference. I booked an executive suite and ordered my partner one dozen red roses. On arrival Donna took my credit card and said it was for a deposit on the stay. No information about hotel amenities - curt and perfunctory. We go to our room - there is no air conditioning. We call to report and are told“it is working just turn the dial”. I open the fridge no comp bottle of water just last guests leftover salad. One cup with coffee machine. Ask for a second cup. When housekeeping comes up with coffee pods (not the cup) she confirms air con is not working and reports it for maintenance. I call to ask where my roses are -“you didn’t say when you wanted them”. I do not stay in lovely hotels all over the world to be treated as if I am an inconvenience to the staff. No bath mat in the en-suite and a pool of water left on the tiled the floor by maintenance fixing the air conditioner. Notice from my bank of a declined transaction for almost double my accomodation charge due to my preset $limit. I go to ask why? I make it clear I have no issue with paying all the accomodation. My complaint is met with “we charge a 30% uplift to cover incidentals during your stay”. No one told me this. It is not on the reservation confirmation. The attitude persists . I think it is resolved being told a $500 USD deduction was processed on $895 USD stay. No problem. UNTIL every 6 hours attempts to debut $900AUD from my credit card.Back to reception. Told I am “mistaken “ the hotel has not tried to deduct more $. Manager called. Louis - smug obnoxious offensive and rude. “The 30% uplift is on the registration card didn’t you read it” . Inform him that other delegates not charged the uplift “they don’t work for the hotel who told you that”. Marco restaurant manager fantastic! Being the only guests in the breakfast room the next day good breakfast attentive service. Only bright spot in an irritating stay. Lots of choices in SD than the faded Westgate

I stay here often as it my favorite hotel in San Diego. The hotel design and decor makes one feel like we are staying at a grand palace. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed with great beds. When I stay here, Luis and Lizzy always look after my needs and make sure I am comfortable and well taken care of. It feels like they are treating me like a well regarded family member, they certainly make their guests feel welcome! The hotel is located right next the the blue line civic center trolley stop, so you can walk to or ride to everything San Diego has to offer. I always look forward to coming “home” to the Westgate. Their restaurant is excellent as well, with high teas being served some afternoons in the lobby lounge area, perfect for mother’s and daughters.
