Even without the stunning backdrop of Mount Hood behind it, this mountain top lodge funded through the art division of the 1930’s Works Progress Administration ranks among America’s best historic properties. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, too. Traditional rooms feature, king, queen and twin beds, with a sofa in the sitting area. The largest room can sleep up to 10.
You can catch a guided tour, wander on your own or ask for the kids’ booklets that launch them on a treasure hunt. They can look for Native American moon symbols carved into beams, blacksmithing work worthy of a castle, and railings capped by hand-carved woodland animals. Other fun for kids includes an outdoor pool (heated, of course) and a room where they can play Ping Pong or shuffleboard.
Teens who’ve been schooled in classic horror movies just might recognize the lodge from the movie “The Shining.” For younger kids, ask if you can say hello to Bruno, the lodge’s St. Bernard, who may be lounging near staff in the registration area. All ages may be surprised to see skiers heading to the slopes — even on a summer morning.
The Cascade Dining Room is best for adults, but kids may enjoy the more casual (but still swanky) Ram’s Head Bar with mountain views or pizza from the cozy lower-level Blue Ox Bar.
