Overview
by Lorilee Craker
The El Moore is everything that’s good and fascinating about the renewal of Detroit. Housed in a stunning (and stunningly rescued) historic 1898 building in Midtown, the hotel has a rare business model of being half apartment, half hotel.
The ownership values environmental stewardship (their goal is to use 80 percent less energy and produce 80 percent less waste than a typical hotel), community well-being (they hire Detroiters and pay them a living wage), and economic growth, and guests can tell in every careful detail. The singular “urban rooftop cabins,” a nod to Michigan’s Up North, all have custom headboards and walls crafted from wood lath salvaged during the El Moore renovation. Families can choose the urban cabin rooms, bunk bed rooms with dedicated bathrooms, or the single suite to accommodate everyone.
