There is a surprising amount of gourmet dining north of Lutsen-Tofte in Grand Marais. Kids, though, won’t be able to resist the giant red-and-white doughnut sign in front of this homey breakfast and snack spot. It has inspired a fiercely loyal following with customers signing their name to the wall and sending photos from across the world with the bakery’s mugs. You can order long johns, chocolate twists, turnovers, jelly doughnuts and sugar-coated “Skizzles,” but most patrons know to keep it simple. It was founder Merieta Altrichter’s old-fashioned cake doughnuts — crispy on the outside, sweet and moist on the inside — that launched the business; it’s open May through September.
