The menu is pretty basic at this Voyageurs institution, but lunch or dinner here makes for a great excursion using one of the park’s touring boats. Sitting on the screened porch overlooking the lake can be an ideal way to ponder the history of this 1910 hotel with slanted floors. Accessible only by water and perched on the cusp of Canada, it was a popular with lumberjacks after the isolation of the woods. Prohibition bootleggers found the border location mighty convenient. If the walls could talk, kids wouldn’t be allowed. The location is so remote that it’s 15 miles from the nearest road: catch the shuttle bus from Ash River Trail.
