When it’s time for a break from sightseeing in Rothenburg, step inside this ornate, Old World classic. You can either choose from regional specialties like goulash or schnitzel with spatzle (German noodles), or treat yourself to another tradition, kaffee und kuchen (coffee and cake). It’s the German version of afternoon tea. You can choose from a variety of baked goods, include Rothenburg’s signature pastry, the schneeball, a local doughnut that resembles a snowball. Originally only made with powdered sugar, they’re now sold in a chocolate covered variation, dipped in caramel and in a variety of other flavors. They’re sold in bakeries, or “konditoreis,” all over Rothenburg, and are boxed as souvenirs.
