The Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki is one of several large, luxury hotels that line the Honolulu skyline. The property is composed of two towers, each with more than 30 floors. The towers’ main levels are comprised of meeting and conference rooms, restaurants, lounges, a fitness room and the lobby. The top floors of each tower house the more expensive suites and between them, there is a promenade deck with a lovely pool overlooking the marina. The elevators are reminiscent of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” as they are glass-walled and soundlessly race up the floors. The top suites have one and two bedrooms and families can easily enjoy these luxury accommodations with the various, year-round promotions offered by the hotel.

The Hawaii Prince is located on the coast and has 541 oceanfront rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, including 57 luxury suites. This chain, in particular, caters to a largely Japanese tourist base, however, visitors from all over the world can be seen in its lobby. Its restaurants cater to the population and offer a wide array of Japanese cuisine. The restaurants also offer regional Hawaiian cuisine, which itself has Japanese influences.

The property is close to Waikiki Beach and the Hawaii Prince Golf Club and the hotel offers complimentary shuttle bus service to both. It also offers a swimming pool and a whirlpool on its promenade with a poolside bar available, making the area both kid- and parent-friendly. Though it was last renovated in 2011, it has been meticulously maintained.

Suites
There are a number of one- and two-bedroom suites available on the top floors of both towers of the Hawaii Prince hotel, a perfect arrangement for families traveling with children. These suites, while on the pricier side of accommodations available in the hotel, offer king or double beds, along with living and dining rooms. This arrangement is perfect for parents traveling with children with early bedtimes.

Guestrooms
Guestrooms are also quite spacious for Honolulu high-rise hotels. Bathrooms feature large bathtubs, as well as standing shower stalls and toilet stalls. There is a swinging door between the bathroom area and the bedroom in standard rooms, which is helpful for sleeping babies and children when parents want to shower and use the restroom. Standard rooms feature mini-fridges and coffee makers, flat-screen TV's and Wi-Fi access, which is included in your resort fee. Some rooms on lower floors (not the suites) are ADA compliant on request and upon availability.

Cribs and rollaway beds are available upon request. Each rollaway bed is twin sized and provided for a per evening fee, with a one extra bed per room limit. Standard bed configurations are one king, two queens or two doubles per room.

The hotel is surrounded by beaches, shopping and outdoor activities appropriate for families. In the hotel lobby, concierges can arrange day trips and activities around the island of Oahu.

Pool
On the property itself, there is a swimming pool, which is open to children and adults alike. The hotel's pool is a standard pool, with a deep end and a shallow end, and there are no lifeguards. A poolside bar offers drinks and snacks, though it isn't guaranteed to be open during all of the pool's operating hours. Pool towels are available free of charge and can be brought to the beach, also without charge.

Beaches and Golf
The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle to the Waikiki Beach, as well as to the golf resort affiliated with the hotel. Within walking distance to the hotel is a public beach, Kahanamoku Beach, a sandy curved beach which offers surfing, swimming and paddleboarding.

There are a few restaurants on the grounds of the hotel, each located on the third floor, and another located at the Golf Club. The restaurants offer an unadvertised children's menu -- be sure to ask about it. There are highchairs available upon request, though there is nothing in the way of entertainment for children at either of the restaurants.

100 Sails Restaurant and Bar
This new restaurant serves a delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner. The resort casual dining experience offers fresh seafood, duck, chicken and more.

Katsumidori Sushi Tokyo
This casual sushi restaurant is the first Katsumidori Sushi Tokyo to open outside of Japan. Lunch and dinner are available here.

Honolulu Coffee Company
At this indoor and outdoor lounge, families can find Kona coffee and light bites.

Bird of Paradise
Located at the Hawaii Prince Golf Club, this casual resort restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and snacks.

All About the Extras
Fitness Center
The fitness center is somewhat small, though it offers basic machines like ellipticals, treadmills and weights. There are lockers and showers also available for guests at no charge. It is located in the Diamond Head tower portion of the building.

Babysitting
The hotel offers babysitting services for an additional fee, which can be arranged by the concierge.

Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi access, which is included in the resort free, is available in guestrooms and throughout the resort.

Resort Fee
The daily resort fee includes self parking, Wi-Fi, two bottles of water daily, the complimentary shuttle and other amenities.

The Art of Smart Timing
One of the beautiful things about Hawaii is there isn't really a high or a low season. Families can visit basically any time of the year and enjoy its temperate climate. As with any vacation spot, the high seasons correspond with school breaks in the summertime and in late December and early January. There is a bit of a wet season in the late fall through March, though it's not rainy enough to impact outdoor activities, if at all. Low season in Hawaii is generally not during school breaks; spring time in mid-April to mid-June and the fall, after school starts in September to right before winter break.

Getting There
The nearest airport is Honolulu, the major hub for the island of Oahu and the islands, and it's about eight miles away from the resort. There are almost a dozen rental car companies available at the airport. Note which companies have their offices onsite in Honolulu, and which offer shuttle buses to their rental desks. Budget options tend to be centered offsite and families traveling with children should keep in mind the additional time and energy necessary to travel to offsite facilities. Considering the additional 20 to 60 minutes necessary on each end of renting the car (pick up and drop off) to travel offsite, it is likely more optimal to rent from an onsite company.

While the hotel (and other Waikiki hotels) advertise their location is a mere 15 minutes from the airport, that is usually not the case in heavy Honolulu traffic, which is common especially during rush hours. During rush hour, that 15 minutes could easily turn into an hour.

The hotel has below-ground parking available for guests, though there is no assistance for those taking luggage from the parking deck to the front desk. It may be easiest to unload luggage out front, where there are waiting bellmen, and then one parent park while the other handled the check-in process.

Getting Around
While there is shuttle service available for a fee from the hotel to and from the airport, there is little cost savings when that fee is measured against a rental car and onsite parking. There are many attractions around the hotel besides the golf range and the beaches, which families may want to visit and having a car will allow them to do so easily. There is also a complimentary shuttle that will transport guests to the beaches and golf course.

Spa
The spa is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and offers a wide range of services, many of them discounted for hotel guests. Services include a massage or facial, manicures, pedicures and hair care. If parents are looking for a relaxing couples activity within the hotel itself, a couple's massage is also available at the spa.
