This family-owned hotel in downtown Homer is perfect for a small family. The two-room suite has a queen bed, twin bed and sleeper sofa, along with a full kitchen that includes a stovetop, oven, refrigerator, microwave, and plenty of pots, pans, dishes and utensils. The Pioneer Inn has a great family-friendly feel, complete with huge front lawn where the owners like to sit and mingle with guests at the end of the day. There aren’t a lot of other amenities, but the rooms are clean, comfortable and affordable.
The Pioneer Inn has a great downtown location that is close to a number of outstanding restaurants. The Pratt Museum is directly across the street from your hotel. It’s a fun place to spend a few hours learning about the history and culture of the area, from the earliest Native Americans up to the 1964 earthquake that caused the Homer Spit to sink into the ocean. Right down the street is the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center, where you can view wildlife and follow a trail down to Bishop’s Beach. If you’re heading out on a halibut fishing charter, the harbor is a 5-mile drive down the Homer Spit, where you can also check out the Sawlty Dawg Saloon, one of the first cabins built in Homer, and recently made famous on the TV show “Deadliest Catch.” There’s a lot to do in Homer, and the family-friendly Pioneer Inn is a great base from which to start your Alaska adventure.

We arrived as planned and was promptly greeted by the owner Rich. He was so friendly! Our unit happened to be upstairs (Apt. C), on the 2nd floor. We had no problem going up the stairs but if this is an issue for you, ask for a floor level unit, as there is no elevator. Once inside, the very spacious unit was way better that what we expected. It was more like a spacious mini apartment. First and foremost, it was immaculate. It had a very spacious bedroom in the back with comfortable bedding, and 2 single beds strategically placed in the living room area. There was also a reclining loveseat in the front room. Very comfortable after our busy days. The large picture window had a very nice view of the water. Water pressure and hot water were good. Internet ok for our needs. Full kitchen with basic supplies available. Get to know Amy and Rich -they are a wealth of information about the area. Hands down this place is so much better than chain hotels. I would come back in a heartbeat!!

I chose the Pioneer Inn as it is family owned, conveniently located and affordable. The room was clean, spacious and warm and Amy and Rich were wonderful hosts. Amy was kind enough to email me after I had called her to relay another guest's experience in traveling to Homer through the Swan Lake Fire. Rich gave me some great ideas for activities and restaurants while in town. I really enjoyed staying here. The only suggestion I would make is to include instructions for the TV in rooms as I couldn't find any and operation of the TV was different to anything I had experienced so far in Alaska. You do need to drive to the Spit from the Inn, but that did not bother me as you should have a car to get around Homer anyway.
