Outrigger Royal sits between Kaanapali and Kapalua on a West Maui beach. The 12-story hotel has a casual atmosphere that tends to attract families. Studio rooms, one- and two-bedroom apartments feature DVD players, kitchens and washer/dryer units. Larger suites can sleep up to six people. Families can watch whales breaching off their balcony. At Outrigger Royal, a freeform pool has an adjacent cabana that families can rent. Young tennis players may want to check out the two lighted tennis courts on the premises. Childcare can be arranged at the hotel, as well. Kahana Gateway Shopping Center is close by, offering restaurants and shops. China Boat, Kahana Grill and Outback Steakhouse are restaurants all within a five-minute walk from the hotel. Not far away, the Maui Pineapple Company hosts tours of the island’s plantations.

This was our second time staying at the Royal Kahana. We stayed in an oceanfront studio in December 2018 and booked the same for this trip. Our first night staying, I found a cockroach in the bathroom. The second night I found another running across the counter in the kitchen. While I recognize that on tropical climates, insects are often unavoidable, it is a little gross to find them inside your hotel especially running around where you have food. Of note, last year we didn't have any issues. Two other couples we stayed with also found multiple cockroaches over the week which makes me wonder if there has been an infestation at the hotel. We observed someone coming in to spray rooms so it's good the hotel is trying to take care of it. After we located the second cockroach, we spoke to Tim at the front desk who was very accommodating and apologetic. He initially offered to have someone come to our room to spray it/fumigate which we did not want since I didn't want to be breathing any of that in. He later upgraded us to a suite on a higher level where we didn't experience any insect issues. I also observed someone at the front desk speaking to staff about how he had gotten bites all over his torso while sleeping. I'm not sure exactly what happened but it's concerning. The hotel isn't a bad one. It's got a great location only minutes away from Lahaina. Whalers Market and Maui Brewing are a 2 minute walk away which is awesome. Of course everything inside is dated and showing a bit of wear, but that's normal for many older hotels or apartments on the island. Staff were always lovely and friendly. There's ample parking out front. But it sounds like there is a major infestation issue going on in the hotel which they're trying to get a handle on which makes me apprehensive about returning.

We came here from halfway around the world (Newfoundland, Canada) and were so pleased with our condo. Ocean view, with the sound of the waves lapping on the beach all day and all night. Beautiful pool and deck, super-pleasant staff and everything we needed for a dream holiday!
