Overview

Recently acquired by Omni Resorts & Hotels, this luxurious resort has undergone a $50-million renovation, with an entirely new look in its 611 guestrooms, suites and villas. Located in Carlsbad, Calif., it draws families with an extensive menu of children’s amenities, including kid’s clubs, pools with water slides and seasonal activities, such as surf lessons and outdoor movies. It offers plenty of adult activities, too; while the kids are busy in the Kidtopia kid’s club, parents can golf at one of two PGA Championship 18-hole courses or relax in the spa or Chopra yoga center. Omni La Costa Resort & Spa is conveniently located just minutes away from LEGOLAND; other notable spots within driving distance are Carlsbad Beach, the Birch Aquarium and San Diego.

Room Information

Find the Best Price for Your Stay

Families both big and small will find an impressive selection of room options to meet their lodging needs. The resort provides 611 guestrooms, suites and villas, all recently renovated with a luxurious look, yet family-friendly appeal.

The best guestrooms for families are the Signature Room and La Costa Room, as both of these offer showers and tubs, but we particularly love the Family Suite, which offers two bedrooms, two bathrooms (with separate showers and deep-soaking tubs) and a living room. The La Costa Suite is another nice option for families, with a sleeper sofa in the living room.

For bigger groups -- and the ultimate in luxury -- villas offer fully equipped kitchens, large dining areas, fireplaces and private patios.

Cribs are available upon request.

Business trip

Beautiful resort with very friendly staff. I think the rooms need upgrading as they are a bit dated. The bed was not the most comfortable but certainly not uncomfortable. The food served as part of the conference was excellent!!

Excellent... But Room for Improvement

The grounds are vast and beautiful with a peaceful feeling, the staff warm and friendly, and the catering delicious. Room service from Vue To Go was impressive, especially when placing the order. They take the time to ask about food allergies, clarify the details, state the current time and the time to expect delivery. The Edge pool area is wonderful.

On the down side... I was surprised that the valet desk did not answer the phone on the morning of checkout, so I found myself lugging my bags from the edge of the property to the pickup area. (I tried to reach them three times.)

There are also no benches available in the ride share area. Benches would be a simple addition. It’s surprising they haven’t been added already as popular as Lyft and Uber have become.

The bench in the bathroom was too short, making the vanity mirror, which would otherwise have been a lovely addition, almost impossible to use.

Still lovely enough to give 4 stars. I plan to visit again.

Family Activities

Kidtopia is a supervised children's club for youngsters ages 6 months to 12 years. Here, kids can crawl on a seven-foot tree house or observe exotic fish in a 600-gallon saltwater aquarium -- under adult supervision, of course. Certified childcare staff engages children with group activities such as games, crafts, dancing and outdoor play. Rates start at $16 per hour, $50 per half day (9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.) or $80 per full day (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Half- and full-day rates include lunch, and there is a 10 percent discount for siblings on half- and full-day sessions. Children under 2 years of age may stay in Kidtopia for a maximum of two hours. On Friday and Saturday nights, the Kidtopia Night Camp offers evening group childcare for potty-trained 3 to 12 -year-olds during the hours of 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. from $55, including dinner.

Vibz Teenspace is a club that caters to a slightly more mature gang -- tweens and teens ages 10 and up can play computers, videogames, foosball, ping pong and other games in the 6,000-square-foot lounge. There is no entrance fee at this club, but some games require payment from a Vibz card, which can be purchased at the front desk in $5, $10 and $20 amounts. Staff does not provide supervision at Vibz Teenspace -- so stick around and play some games if you don't feel comfortable leaving your child alone. During summer months, golf and tennis camps offer lessons in a group setting (rates are hourly and vary by season), and half-day surf camps are on hand for kids ages 6 to 12 at nearby Carlsbad Beach.

Other kid-friendly amenities include seven outdoor heated swimming pools with three waterslides and a water play area; a goody bag for the kids upon arrival; and a babysitting referral service. The concierge will provide information for a local childcare service, Marian Childcare, upon request (rates run about $20 per hour).

Family Dining

Guests at La Costa can take their pick of two restaurants: Legends Bistro and the Blue Fire Bar and Grill, and two cafes: Splash Poolside Bar & Cafe and Spa Cafe. A Healthy Kids children's menu is offered at the Legends Bistro, which dishes up gourmet comfort food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and at the Blue Fire Bar and Grill, an upscale dinner-only seafood restaurant. The Healthy Kids menu is also available for in-room dining. Typical kid's menu items, like chicken strips and grilled cheese, are offered on the Splash Poolside Bar & Cafe menu. The Spa Cafe does not have a children's menu.
