Look up or you may miss lions, tigers and other big cats walking above you in Philadelphia this summer. The Philadelphia Zoo’s new Big Cat Crossing opened Memorial Day Weekend as the third installment in its Zoo360 project. Big cats can now walk freely along a 330-foot, mesh-enclosed trail that takes them above the main visitor’s path.
The new path joins a similar 1, 735-foot monkey trail and the Great Ape Trail for orangutans and gibbons, which will soon connect to the gorilla exhibit. Another ground-based trail is in the works for large safari animals like giraffe and zebra. The Philadelphia Zoo is incorporating the new trails to provide more roaming and freedom for its animals.
