Payphones are a thing of the past in New York City, where they will soon be replaced with free Wi-Fi hubs.
The city plans to replace 10,000-some payphones with Wi-Fi hotspots that allow free Internet access and free calls within the U.S., along with charging stations for devices.
The program, called CityLink, will bring Wi-Fi hotspots to the Big Apple as early as 2015; they will be available in all five boroughs of the city.
