KOA Camping Study Reveals Technology Important in the Great Outdoors

The 2015 North American Camping Report survey of nearly 3,000 people revealed that even when enjoying the great outdoors, technology reigns supreme in camping. Eighty-three percent of campers surveyed bring their cell phones camping, and nearly half of them go online at least once a day.

In the annual independent study developed by Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA), four out of 10 surveyed say free Wi-Fi influenced their decision on where to stay when camping. In fact, free Wi-Fi ranked third most important – behind clean restrooms and a kid-friendly environment – surpassing even recreational activities. The majority of campers bringing a cell phone were those 25 and younger (86 percent), and 28 of the same age group said having a smartphone was almost as important as having toilet paper.

When asked why camping is important, respondents cited spending time with family and friends, exploring new areas, and decreased gas prices as top factors. Learn more about KOA campgrounds in North America.
