The City of Chicago is gearing up for the holiday season with plans for its 103rd Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, which will take place in Millennium Park on Nov. 18, 2016. The annual event, presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, includes the opening of the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink for the holidays.
The 103rd tree lighting ceremony program in Chicago will begin at 6 p.m. with performances and special guests, with the tree lighting taking place at 6:30 p.m. International percussion performers from STOMP will be on hand, along with a special appearance by Santa Claus. The full lineup for the event will be announced in early November.
The McCormick Tribune Ice Rink at Millennium Park will open at noon on Nov. 18 and remain open through Mar. 5, 2017. Lessons and special programs will be offered during public school breaks, with the ice rink open as weather permits.
Santa will also set up shop in the park, providing a chance for kids to have their picture taken with Santa throughout the holiday season. Santa Claus House will be located at Chase Promenade with visiting hours on Saturday and Sundays from Nov. 26 through Dec. 18 from noon to 6 p.m. During the tree lighting event, Santa will take visitors from noon to 6 p.m. from Nov. 18 through Nov. 20. Parents will need to use their own cameras for the photos.
Also taking place will be Caroling at Cloud Gate. The festive concert series at “The Bean” will take place on Fridays between Nov. 25 and Dec. 16. Participating choral groups include the Chicago’s Children’s Choir and the British International School of Chicago. Concerts take place from 6 to 7 p.m., weather permitting, and are free.
