Was once a great hotel

by tenspeed21

The buildings, beds and furniture show how this was once great. But now let down by clueless staff and a lack of maintenance. They seemed unable to understand why, for instance, we were concerned that the room could not be locked securely. But do ask for the services of Yuri, a local guide. His walk was the highlight of our trip.

We loved our room

By Indonesian standards, this is a great hotel. But, as others have noted, it may not meet everyone's expectations. It is beautifully situated on a hillside, with reception and the restaurant at the top of a hill and a few rooms on that level; all the other rooms are down the hill and accessible by steps. There are lots of views of a beautiful green valley and hills across the valley and in the distance you can see a glimpse of the Pacific Ocean, We were in room 205, a "superior nature villa" on the top of in the very last building (there was another room below), which was very private and had a great view - and was 150 steps down from the main building. It looked like the picture on their website and, in typical Indonesian style, had the living area outside - a large balcony with a table where we loved to sit. The sleeping area inside was one big room with a king-size bed, night stands on both sides, a twin bed, and a small desk - all good quality furniture, but somehow it didn't add up to spectacular - perhaps because there was a bit too much empty space and there was a bare florescent bulb in the ceiling of the dressing area outside the very large bathroom but poorly lit bathroom that had a window, which was great, but could have been better appointed - plus we were given only two towels (no handtowels), and no shampoo or other amenities.

It can be a bit buggy at night, but there was a net around the bed. No air-conditioner, but we didn't really need it - at least for temperature. It was very humid, however, and so there is a lot of moisture in the air, which had apparently crept into the bedclothes (we suspect the room hadn't been used in a while), which had a very musty smell. When we reported this (after our first night), they readily changed them - and I think also switched out the mattress - which solved the problem. It is very quiet, but you can hear the sounds of running water and the night songs of frogs, crickets, and other animals.

Staff were great and very accommodating. The restaurant was OK, but nothing special. If we found ourselves back here, we would definitely stay here again.
