Another lux hotel in the heart of Charleston is the Market Pavilion, which also features a rooftop pool. This one, however, overlooks Charleston Harbor and features a cascading pool surrounded by lush vegetation. No double bed offerings here, either: two-bed rooms come queen sized!

A fantastically stocked shop concentrating mostly on kitchen wear. For those of us who lament the passing of Roches Stores homewares department Market 57 in High Street will not disappoint - they are also, I understand, in Westport and Clifden. An amazing array of items too numerous to mention and all well priced - some great quirky gift ideas too!

The hotel is perfectly situated: across from the market, within steps of several great restaurants. Our king room was spacious and clean with 2 Juliet balconies and a view of the market. Our king bed was comfortable but showing it’s age as it sloped a bit on one side. We appreciated the spacious, marble bathroom with separate tub and shower, great lighting, good quality makeup mirror, Hermès bath products and extra sets of towels. The hotel was quiet at night and we were able to sleep soundly. Continental breakfast left on our floor each morning was convenient. We enjoyed the coffee, orange juice and excellent, authentic croissants and pain au chocolat. There were muffins and other pastries as well. Tea, coffee, apples and oranges were available all day right by the elevator. The rooftop bar area is beautiful. Front desk and concierge staff were cordial. Unfortunately we did not quite receive the southern hospitality that we were expecting: There was no one to open the hotel doors when we arrived in the afternoon with our luggage. No offer of bringing our luggage/showing us to our room. No offer of a map of the city or other visitor information upon arrival. No acknowledgement of our anniversary even though it was mentioned when booking with the hotel directly. Despite these things we would still recommend the Market Pavilion and stay again, particularly for location.
