Surprising how run-down this place is--it was booked by our folks and they usually prefer something a little nicer. It appears the property owners are attempting renovation on some rooms, as there is a dumpster in the parking lot full of old furniture and construction trash. At the entrance there is a printed 8x11 paper taped to the entrance sign that says "Formally the Key West Inn" --I don't know if that was a typo and they meant "formerly" or the old name was "Waterfront Villas" or whatever it said underneath, and now it's formally known as the Key West Inn?
There is potential here, but the staff soured us as much as the worn room did.
The exterior of the motel seems to have survived Hurricane Irma just fine. It's the interior of the two-story villa-style rooms that seem to have seen one spring break bash too many.
I like the bright tropical colors of the walls and the furnishings, but the upholstery is very worn and holey. My mother-in-law actually rejected the first room offered to her because it was just too run-down. The blinds to the kitchen balcony overlooking the canal had several slats missing. The room had an overpowering fragrance of cheap laundry soap. Weird stains on the carpets. A dangerous lamp that seemed to have shorted out. Mildew in the bathrooms. The kitchen did not have many useful utensils or glassware to use.
My mother-in-law found this as a pet-friendly option for our one night stop in Key Largo. I appreciate their pet-friendliness, but the guy at the front office was power-trippin' on both of us about dogs--- threatening both of us, in separate encounters, with some speech about "if you didn't declare you have a pet with you you'd be really sorry if I found it later. I'd charge you hundreds of dollars and you'd not be happy." As it is they charge $50 a pet, (which is honestly too expensive for this property). We had declared that we had a pet with us and paid the fee immediately, so I resented his weird posturing about it. He seemed to be enjoying a little too much the thought of "busting" someone for sneaking in a pet! It was odd and unwelcoming.
While he was sitting at the front counter an economy size pump bottle of roach killer spray was in plain sight on the floor behind his desk.
I appreciated that our room had a bathroom on both the 1st and 2nd floors. Other than that, the only good part was the location across the channel from Sharky's. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony having drinks and a pizza from The Upper Crust while listening to the great one-man-band playing over yonder.
