Next door to Glacier National Park, the Izaak Walton Inn & Resort in Essex offers families a retreat in the heart of outdoor recreation. Accommodations range from rooms in the main lodge to ski in/ski out cabins to luxury railcars and actual caboose train cars. While lodging offers many of the comforts found in most traditional hotels, there are some conveniences not available here. At the lodge, there are no TVs, telephones, elevators, air conditioning or in-room coffee makers. In addition, as a result of the lodge’s remote location, there is no cell service within a 30-mile radius; however, free Wi-Fi is available in the lobby and the Flagstop Bar. Requiring a two-night minimum stay, caboose rooms and cabins do contain a kitchen. Luxury railcars also feature kitchens and gas fireplaces. The resort has a full-service restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. And, of course, there are a number of onsite activities, like cross-country and snowshoeing trails, hiking, and, closer to the inn, an outdoor hot tub.

We came for our anniversary and stayed in the blue caboose, it was nice and clean but the bed was very uncomfortable. Most of the staff were nice and helpful.
Our main complaint about our experience was quality of food in the restaurant. My husband ordered the fish and chips for $19. They were frozen fish sticks from FSA and the fries the same. To say the lease it was not good. The quality is not there for the price of the food. I had a NY strip with a salad for $32, they had cooked it nicely but the quality of the cut was not. If I had to guess I would say this frozen from FSA. I am from the area and know how many places you could get local from that are quality ingredients and I would have no problem paying that price. We had great servers that were happy and helpful. So we tried breakfast, all I can say is that it had absolutely no flavor. The potatoes were straight from a frozen bag that tasted like nothing. (You know this when they are uniform squares you buy in the freezer section at the store.) The scrambled eggs were over cooked and tasteless and the english muffin was burnt.

We had a nice time at the Izaak Walton Inn. Food in the restaurant was nice. Stay was overall a fun experience in a period hotel. Keep in mind, if the weather is warm, there is no air-conditioning in the hotel. Would surely stay again.
