Nice Hotel, average package

by somersetsqueaky

This Hotel is very capable of being a 5 star hotel but as it is run as an all inclusive package hotel it falls short. At times feeling a bit like Butlins! Yes it was half term so what did we expect!
My partner and our daughter came for a break in last week of October. Airport pickup was easy and trip is only 20 mins, on arrival at Hotel we had to wait to be shown to rooms in groups after having our names called! Felt like school children, not what i have seen in any other 5 star hotel i've stayed in! We were upgraded to a family room with a pool which was very welcome, one double bedroom and 2 sofa's that we pushed together to form a bed. Room was cleanish (some rubbish left in cupboard by fridge). Housekeeping were excellent and made the sofa's into a decent bed with a mattress. The bathroom was huge and would be better split into 2 for a family room.
We had a late arrival and food was a late night buffet in the Fig and Olive, it was ok - just. Next morning, and all mornings, the breakfast in the main restaurant was good, some food was warm rather than hot but it is a buffet. Make sure you go to the extremes of the restaurant or it is a bit like a canteen at school - this was even more true of the evening meals where the food was tepid, but it did taste fine and there was plenty of choice. We managed to get into some of the other restaurants on 4 evenings, booking via the App - as long as you are hovering over the book button at 10.01 you could normally get in - this system is poor and there were loads of complaints! Asian was very nice and the service was a world away from any of the others, Fig and Olive was poor, Mexican was ok. Soft drinks in all of the restaurants were on tap so tasted very watered down, but canned drinks in the room so that was another reason to stay by our own pool.
The main hotel pool is a good size but unless you had your towels out at 07.30 forget it - and i'm not joking! Also the pool is not heated so it was freezing and looked dirty. Luckily our room pool was heated and nice and clean.
We made use of the activities and these were great fun, archery, aquaboard, yoga outdoor cinema, etc all great. We ran around the whole villa resort on a number of days and it was a beautiful place but a bit hilly. I enquired about golf but it was very expensive at about €140 for a round!
Overall we had a decent break but the overall experience falls well short of 5 star, i can only assume some reviewers have never stayed in a proper 5 star hotel, however this isn't 5 star prices at £3000 for the 3 of us for a week so I think from a value point of view it was ok. I wouldn't go back to this Hotel but may well have a Villa holiday at Aphrodite Hills in the future.

NOWHERE NEAR 5 STAR, never again, TUI over rate this hotel hugely

On arrival we were "upgraded" (NOT at our request) from a room which would have had full sun on the patio, sunbeds and swim-up pool all day, to a room with almost TOTAL SHADE virtually all day. The only partial sun on our section of swim-up pool and patio was from 1-30pm to 3-30pm. We had to go to the end of the block and balance on the curved edge of the pool on an 18 inch wide bit of edging to get any sun. We tried the main pools but they were absolutely freezing and the kids struggled to stay in them, PLUS we could not get sun-beds as people reserved them with towels despite a NO RESERVE POLICY which isn't enforced anyway. When I asked about this I was told by the TUI manager "If we enforced it there would be uproar, everyone would be in reception complaining. It's impossible to enforce".
The snack bar at the kids splash pool ran out of food, and was so short of glasses they took your drink away with half left in it when you weren't looking. I actually heard the guy say to the glass collector "take them out of their hands if you have to, we've run out"
The edge of my swim-up pool was damaged and caused a cut to my toe and ankle as it collapsed when walking round the pool.
The kettle in the room did not work.
The mini-bar didn't get topped up properly on some days and by day 5 no-one came to top it up at all leaving us with no drinks. Despite asking staff AND going to report this to reception to a man called "BRIAN" still nothing came.
On occasions we queued for up to 15 minutes (OUTSIDE) to get into the dining room, and sometimes when eventually seated there was no cutlery. Drinks took ages, sometimes arriving AFTER we had finished eating!!! 5 STAR ???? REALLY £4300 for this is disgraceful.
On a positive note two staff stood out as being particularly friendly helpful, Constantin and Laura, and if it weren't for them I think I'd have given up and gone and helped myself at the bar.
The final insult was on departure when after paying an extra £121 for a late checkout I spoke to two people who were allowed to do this for free?? How can this be justified??? Why do I pay this and not others?
I've been to the Sensitori at Tenerife, which strangely has been downgraded to Platinum I believe, but that was head and shoulders above this.
5 STAR prices but more akin to Premier Inn service.
It was clear that the TUI staff were in wind-down mode as it was the end of the season and the last few days of their year, and boy it showed.
TUI need to take a look at themselves with this, total rip off. If I'd paid £2 or £3 thousand and it was rated as 3 STAR I'd have been more inclined to say its fair.
BEWARE IF YOU'RE THINKING OF BOOKING THIS VIA TUI.
