Located in San Diego, Hotel La Jolla offers all the family-friendly accommodations and amenities of a typical Kimpton property, but with exceptionally gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean.
Families enjoy a complimentary shuttle service (to and from locations within a five-mile radius of La Jolla), an onsite restaurant, heated swimming pool, complimentary Wi-Fi and complimentary coffee and tea in the lobby each morning. For parents, there’s a fitness center, spa, and complimentary wine reception each evening. For kids, there’s cribs, high chairs and play yards, and for Fido (he’s part of the family, too!), there’s complimentary pet bowls and beds. He’ll also stay free of charge.
Several room variations are offered, though we think the Deluxe Guest Rooms are most suitable for families. Each one features two queen (or one king) beds and a balcony, and is conveniently located on the second through fifth floors. For the ultimate accommodations (and more space), book the Oceanview Luxury Suite. This unit is 900 square feet in size, and features two bathrooms, two balconies and a separate living room.

During our 7-night stay, housekeeping did not clean our room TWICE. We left the room at around 1pm, did not leave the ‘do not disturb’ sign out, and told the front desk that our room could be cleaned before heading out for the day on both occasions.

We were visiting UCSD and needed a place for an overnight. I was surprised when I walked into the room that this is a a Hilton brand hotel. The hotel is dated. The elevator old, noisy and in need of a facelift.
Their description of a “peekaboo” shower means a window through to the room with an automatic/power blind. Weird.
The beds were comfortable but the chair and ottoman in the room were stained. The power cord contraption to charge phones etc had a cake of sticky dust on it. The rest of room was clean but the whole thing just felt old and dated.
The walls are paper thin and I could hear the conversations next door clear as day at 1am that we had to turn on the rickety sounding fan to provide some white noise.
The lobby is the only area that matches the “chic boutique” description provided by the hotel. But it still feels dated despite having undergone some sort of renovation.
We also went to the restaurant, Cusp, on the 11th floor for breakfast. The view was really nice and I can see how perhaps at night, the bar and restaurant might have some life. However the breakfast food offerings were “meh”. I had the eggs on wilted arugula with tomatoes and mozzarella. It was only ok. The sourdough underneath was soggy and the flavors of the whole thing-underwhelming. My husbands omelette was “mediocre at best”. Service was very good though.
If you need an overnight for a place to crash, this is ok. Yet, you won’t get a good night sleep as you can hear your neighbors. I wouldn’t come here for a family vacation as you can’t walk to the beach with little ones (too far) and it isn’t a luxury hotel if that is what you want for your vacation.
That said, the location was unbeatable—ten min drive to UCSD and less than that to La Jolla Village.
