Overview
by Jeff Bogle
There are many other hotels in Holland, Michigan — several are clustered around this Holiday Inn Express, in fact — but none of the accommodation choices in this peach of a city look like they belong in a place called Holland, and none will make you feel as welcome in this European-inspired hotbed of tulips, windmills and charm as this Instagram-worthy Holiday Inn Express.
The hotel, while not in the downtown core of Holland, offers families the shortest trip imaginable to the wooden shoe slide, antique carousel and windmill Ferris wheel of the incomparable Nelis’ Dutch Village theme park and to the outdoor grandeur (and tulips!) of Windmill Island.
Free daily breakfast, a stunning pool, hot tub and game room area, spacious guestrooms and the atmosphere of being in a far away land make this Holiday Inn Express an extremely special place to visit while exploring all that Holland, Michigan has to offer during Tulip Time, or anytime.

The rooms at this Holiday Inn Express feature an ingenious soft yellow light beneath the sink and vanity in the bathroom. This clever set-up is far better than a nightlight because it illuminates only where you need to walk, sparing young and old eyes alike from a middle-of-the-night confrontation with the harshness of unwelcome light.
All rooms at this hotel feature a flat-screen TV, mini-fridge, microwave, coffee machine, free Wi-Fi, two phones and a desk, and pillowcases with 'firm' or 'soft' labels to help you get a great night's sleep.
There are a total of seven accessible rooms at the Holland Holiday Inn Express. Inquire about availability at the time of reservation.
Rollaway beds are available for $15 per night; cribs are available at no cost.

Great location, within 5-10 minutes of most things. Near allot of stores, within 5-10 min. of downtown and very close to the beach. Great time, great staff and very friendly people. The hotel breakfast is also great. There is a small video arcade area, and the pool is clean with towels available next to the pool for their guests. The pool is a good size and the hottub has access that goes outside as well (this one is smaller).
I would return.

We dropped in here without a reservation and stayed for one night. I expected Holiday Inn Express hotels to be bare bones and inexpensive but neither of these suppositions proved to be true. It was a very nice place with a gorgeous indoor pool, a small fitness center, very large comfortable rooms and an outstanding free breakfast buffet. We were very pleased with every aspect of this hotel. And we might add, it was immaculately clean. It was a bit more expensive than I expected in late October ($161 + taxes with an AAA discount). One might find a cheaper place to stay in the area but chances are it won't be nearly as nice.
Family Activities
Pools
The Holiday Inn Express Holland has a large pool molded into the shape of the mitt (Michigan's lower half) and set inside a two-story high oasis of relaxation, with a bright red star on the pool floor indicating exactly where your family is located in Holland. There's also an amazing indoor/outdoor whirlpool hot tub that kids will absolutely love because you go from inside the hotel to out into the elements through plastic flaps like at a car wash. It's great fun! In fact, while Holland itself is lovely, this little aquatic touch in the hotel may end up the highlight of your kids' vacation!
The pool is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. for all ages, and then for adults only from 10 p.m. to midnight.
Game Room
An expansive second floor game room overlooks the pool area. There's a Ping-Pong table, air hockey, skee ball and video games to choose from, and a machine to turn dollars into tokens (which ultimately turns into hours of family fun).
Sport Court
On pleasant days, there's a colorful outdoor sport court for families to play basketball, tennis or volleyball together.
Family Dining
Free Breakfast
The free breakfast area is a large, cozy space with wooden, cabin-like furniture. It's situated just off the lobby and looks upon the pool and hot tub through floor-to-ceiling windows. Breakfast is served daily from 6 to 10 a.m. and the eggs, sausage, pancake mix, cold cereal, oatmeal, juices and pastries (including fresh warm cinnamon rolls) will satisfy most everyone's needs in the morning.
Delivery
In-room dining is available from Sharkee's Bar and Grill, which is located (shhh, inside another hotel) just outside of the Holiday Inn's entrance, from 5 to 11 p.m. each evening.

Getting There
Aside from manageable a road trip from most of the Midwest, three major airports are your best bet for reaching Holland, Michigan. Affordable airfare with minimal or no connections can be found flying into either Chicago airports or into Detroit. Each is an easy 2.5-hour drive to Holland. Indianapolis is also relatively close -- a straight shot on the highway and less than four hours away.
Getting Around
Holland, Michigan is an easy city to drive, with plenty of street and lot parking. You can get from the Holiday Inn Express to Windmill Island to downtown to lakefront beaches within minutes. Holland's 8th Street (which serves as the Main Street of downtown) is flat and walkable. Families with strollers and/or wheelchairs will enjoy visiting the shops and restaurants of downtown Holland.
For Mom and Dad
The hotel's indoor/outdoor hot tub is a prime mom and dad destination to cozy up for a moment or two of peace and quiet while the kids swim in the massive Michigan shaped heated pool or scamper up to the 2nd floor balcony to play skee ball, air hockey, and other games. Sure, they will plow through a sleeve of quarters, but compared to a babysitter's fee, that's a steal!
