My wife and I were visiting her family in Casper, WY and they recommended we drive out for the night and try this hotel. Since we are foodies in the DC area the idea of a Cordon Bleu chef in Cuisine and Pâtisserie preparing a meal in such a small town was too much to resist. We made the 2 1/2 hour drive to find ourselves in such a wonderful little hotel. Susan checked us in and showed us to our room. The next time we saw her, she was in her chefs jacket preparing dinner! Our meal was nothing less that stellar and we both enjoyed every delicious morsel. In the morning Susan greeted us again and prepared an equally delicious breakfast. We will definitely go back for a longer stay to enjoy the wonderful food and peaceful serenity!

We were traveling from Jackson, WY to Omaha, NE and needed a nice place to rest overnight—The Historic Elk Mountain Hotel was a perfect waystation for our journey. The hotel sits conveniently close to Highway 80 yet is far enough off the interstate, so road noise doesn’t disturb your sleep. (TIP: if you’re traveling I80 through WY, include this hotel in your plans if possible). The hotel is well maintained and meticulously cleaned with a décor harkening back to a different era yet still very relevant to the needs of today’s travelers. The staff are wonderful at every turn—the proprietors are top-notch professionals and are serious about making their guest feel welcome and well cared for. We chose the Freemont room and were surprised to learn we had a convenient private entrance and patio (TIP: this is a perfect room for folks who want additional privacy or are disabled). The room was comfortable and inviting and included a private full bathroom. The bed was very comfortable and well appointed. We chose to eat dinner at the hotel. The dining room was cozy, even a little romantic. The guests were scheduled for a staggered arrival to help balance the kitchen needs while still providing a dining room of quiet chatter. The food was very good, exactly as the proprietor/chef describes: “simple, honest, unpretentious food that's full of unique flavors and cooked to perfection.” Expect to taste French influences on dishes. The menu is interesting and sets you up for a hard choice. The Salmon Pillow Case was a beautiful cut of salmon surrounded by puff pastry with a nice sauce and vegetables. The Flat Iron Steak was a perfectly cooked, nicely sliced a presented steak—rich and tender—accompanied by a stack of crispy steak fries and vegetables (I hate nearly every bite). After a cocktail, chats with other guests in the parlor, and the dinner, we retired to a quiet sleep in the comfy bed with the window open for a nice breeze. Perfect. The hotel offers internet and has a terrific web site (TIP: spend some time enjoying the stories and bits of information the site offers). The Prices were good; well established for the quality of the service, rooms, and food. Highly recommended. Don’t miss this gem if you’re traveling through southern WY along Highway 80!
