I do a lot of traveling, both domestically and foreign. I care a lot about the places I stay in, and though I don’t require them to be luxurious, I do require them to be comfortable. But a real bonus for me is when they feel just right, and Grizzly Rpadhouse is one of those places. It well worth the little bit extra money to have both the comfort and the “just right” feeling. Nearby Cortez has very little to offer in the way of ambiance or character. Staying here, just a few miles outside of town, is orders of magnitude better than staying there, because this place has both.
The entire property is quite rural in feel, and we have a spacious patio running the length of the building and facing a stand of trees. It’s perfectly lovely to sit out on the patio, as if I were in my own home instead of someone else’s. We have two bedrooms and two baths, plus a kitchen, in our cottage. The beds are very comfortable, the kitchen and bathrooms well equipped. The WiFi is excellent. The rooms are decorated with taste, not generic hotel rooms in the slightest. The owner, Michelle, is an artist, and there is a lot of her work on the walls. My favorites are the paintings of Frieda Kahlo and the drag queen cats in my bathroom. Michelle is a very sweet, fun lady, and did her best to make us feel welcomed and at home. She is very easy to talk with, and very willing to provide information and advice. Her own house is filled with artwork, Indian crafts, and beautiful objects.
Had we stayed in town, we would have had a perfectly adequate place to park ourselves at night. For not a lot more, we had a place that we really enjoyed being in, with a warm and welcoming innkeeper. I only wish we had more time to spend in this part of Colorado.

Our family stay at the Deerhaven Cottage was ideal, the best of our trip. This 2-bedroom cottage has very comfortable beds and common area, all exquisitely maintained and furnished. The kitchen has everything you would need to prepare a feast. The location provides easy access to Mesa Verde National Park and Hovenweep National Monument. Michelle is a warm and welcoming host, who is happy to share her vast knowledge of the area and Native Americans. Highly recommend.
