Walking into The Grand Bohemian Hotel Mountain Brook, Autograph Collection in Birmingham, Alabama, is like walking into Alice’s Wonderland. Everything about the hotel, which debuted in 2015, is whimsical, from the lobby entrance to the rooftop courtyard. It is considered the most luxurious hotel in downtown Birmingham.
While kids will ogle at the decor, they won’t be particularly entertained at this hotel. The upscale hotel mostly caters to couples and business clientele, though it does offer comfortable guestrooms, a swimming pool and kids’ menus at the onsite restaurant. It is within walking distance of the Birmingham Zoo and Botanical Gardens, as well.

The hotel is a lovely property but I found the front desk and management tedious and never felt like a welcomed or valued customer. I felt I was imposing to ask for any accomadation with my stay. This contiuned when I called back two days later to make a billing inquiry. My advice is to stay at one of the other local Marrriot properties where I always get that genuine Marriot congeniality and service.

This is one of my favorite hotels in Birmingham. It’s right across from the botanical gardens and zoo; easily walkable to shopping and restaurants; and it’s near a park and running trail for exercising. It’s also close to freeways and downtown and is in one of the best parts of town.
When I’m in town, I swap things up and stay here or at the Elyton, which is downtown. The hotels are both great but provide very different settings. The Elyton does more for Bonvoy elite members, including a better breakfast benefit. I’ve also had upgrades to suites at the Elyton but not the Grand Bohemian. That said, I still love the look and feel of this hotel. On my last check in here, the two ladies who checked me in were very friendly and gave me a great corner room.
The owners of these hotels love wine, food, art, and hospitality... and it shows. I’ve stayed at Kessler hotels in Orlando, Asheville, St. Augustine, and Savannah, and this is my favorite one. I would just recommend that they improve the breakfast benefit and perhaps upgrade more liberally to suites (if they have many). But, I still strongly recommend this hotel.
