Overview

Located in downtown Winnipeg, about a 10-minute walk from The Forks, this historic hotel gives off a vibe from another era but still features all the modern amenities that families seek. Built in 1913 by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, the Fort Garry Hotel was considered a grand hotel during Winnipeg’s economic boom as a transportation hub.

The Fort Garry Hotel, designated a National Historic Site of Canada, features chateau-style architecture, and much of the historic charms remain today. The monogrammed, brass doorknobs, wide hallways and 10-foot high guestroom ceilings are features of the past that remain in the present at Fort Garry.

The hotel suffered a fire in the 1970s but was restored and reopened in the 1980s. The current owners took ownership in 2009 and after extensive renovations, rebranded the hotel with the addition of the spa and event space.

Today, families can enjoy the onsite dining options, special cookie delivery to guestrooms and the free Wi-Fi, of course.

Reviews

Location, staff, and comfort contributed to wonderful stay

by grip652

Three nights in a king room--good sized closet, one robe with the option to ask for more, good-sized bathroom, but not many spaces to put personal toiletries, etc. Everything was clean, clean. The bed was comfortable, however, the drapes and shade did not meet, so there was a tremendous amount of light coming in the window because of a giant spotlight focussed the outside of the hotel. Breakfast buffet has a wonderful selection of pastries just inside the entry and fresh fruit. In the dining room, eggs to order, and cereal, yogurt station. If you want toast, just ask--they will make it for you. Also if you want cranberry rather than orange juice, ask. The dining room staff is sometimes too thin for a roomfull of diners, but less busy times will get you excellent service and coffee refills. All staff I encountered was helpful, and friendly. The lobby can be hectic, too, with many tour groups gathering for polar bear, northern lights, trips. Three elevators--but the crowds were not a problem. Everything seemed to run smoothly and timely. Location--for us it was great. It's within comfortable walking distance of so many sites, shopping, restaurants and offices--just choose a direction. Meeting rooms were comfortable temperature-wise and accoustics were good. You can change us currency for Canadian at the front desk, and the gift shop around the corner has postal stamps. We returned for another night and had a queen room--the draperies fit great, so there was no light problem. We called for the complimentary coffee and biscotti about 7:30 and a large pot with plenty of cream and sugar was there withinin 15 minutes. The shuttle to the airport was our last positive connection with the Fort Garry. We would gladly stay there if we should return to Winnipeg.

Fine Fort

by afcok

We stayed a total of 3 nights in this historic hotel, with a grand entrance and public areas reminiscent of many in European capitals. We stayed a total of 3 nights.
Our accommodation was fine but not so grand. Adequate size bedroom, good heating (essential in November) and small but functional bathroom.
Breakfast buffet was fairly good with eggs cooked to order.
Staff were friendly ... almost all Canadians seem to be!

Family Activities

Indoor Pool at the Athletic Center

The hotel has partnered with the Athletic Center attached to the building, and guests are permitted to use the indoor pool and full-service fitness facilities free of charge. Guests take a short indoor skywalk to the facility and use the room key to gain access. The center is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.

The large indoor pool is separate from the fitness area and features a whirlpool and a kiddie pool. There is an outdoor sundeck to enjoy on a summer day, too. Chairs surround the pool, and pool noodles are provided along with pool towels. No lifeguard is on duty. Restrooms and locker rooms are situated nearby.

There is a large fitness area with lots of cardio and weight machines and an indoor jogging track and steam room. Gym towels are provided.

Family Dining

There are several dining options available within this historic hotel, some more casual than others, but all accommodating for families.

The Palm Lounge

Located off the lobby, this piano lounge is open for lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to midnight. Despite its finer appearance with the large chandelier, elegant woodwork and leather chairs, The Palm Lounge is family-friendly and the menu includes things like pizza and sandwiches. In the evenings, there is often piano entertainment.

Broadway Breakfast Room

The hot breakfast buffet in the Broadway Breakfast Room is an excellent place to start your day. The buffet includes a little bit of everything and always has cook-to-order, gluten-free and vegan options as well. Breakfast is available from 6 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday and from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday. Hotel guests are offered a discounted rate for breakfast, and children under 5 eat free.

Gallery Deli

This deli has an old-school, diner vibe and features modern cuisine. The deli makes its own sourdough bread (yum!) and offers sandwiches, homemade soups, snacks and more. There are plenty of tables to enjoy your meal, or you can hit up the grab-and-go options if you're heading out the door. This deli is nearly always open, with hours from 6 a.m. to midnight daily.

In-Room Dining

In-room dining is available to guests from 6 a.m. to midnight.
