Overview
by Phil Corless
One of the most beautiful log buildings you’ll ever see, the Fireweed Station Inn was originally built in 1946 as a remote hunting lodge. Now it houses guests in one of three luxurious suites. For a family of five, the Fireweed Suite on the second floor is ideal, with a queen bed, twin bed and a queen futon. Your family will have the entire floor to yourself, so it’s peaceful and quiet. Kids will love the massive rock fireplace and exposed timbers. They’ll quickly find the horseshoe pit and badminton court outside, as well as extensive trails leading through the woods and over several creeks. Each morning you’ll enjoy a hearty home-cooked breakfast of pancakes, sausage, eggs, granola, fruit, yogurt, pastries and more. The Inn’s owners are known for using only the freshest ingredients, including items from their own garden.
Fireweed Station Inn is located two hours north of Anchorage, just a few miles off the Parks Highway. The Inn is 10 miles from the town of Talkeetna and its historic downtown, where you can browse art galleries, hear live music in the park and sample authentic Alaskan dishes at any number of restaurants. Kids will enjoy learning about the early trappers and mountaineers at the Talkeetna Museum, then grabbing a snack at the century-old Nagley’s General Store. Talkeetna is a gateway to a vast number of wilderness activities, including excursions into Denali National Park, where you can hike in the shadow of North America’s tallest mountain or land in an airplane on one of the many glaciers in the park. The Fireweed Station Inn, with its charming rooms and idyllic setting, will make a great place to stay during your family vacation to Alaska.
