This family-owned motel is located in nearby Beatty, but its location — just off the freeway — is ideal for those heading into Death Valley, and the low price is definitely a draw. While dated on the outside, some rooms have been remodeled (be sure to ask for one) and the motel gets high marks for being spotlessly clean. Rooms also have microwaves, mini-fridges and cable TV to keep kids fed and happy.

El Portal Motel was the perfect stop for me on my way from Las Vegas to Death Valley National Park. The price was right and the room was clean, the shower was hot, and the wifi worked. As a solo female traveler, El Portal has my vote of confidence - all was very quiet and others there were just tourists on stopovers like myself. I was really charmed by the rotary phone in the lobby and the history of both the hotel and Beatty, Nevada.

We were disappointed in this motel. After reading the reviews we were feeling pretty confident in making our reservation. Once we pulled up I was immediately disappointed. This motel needs a major overhaul. Old furniture, looks like not much has been done in many years. The room was clean, there was no breakfast either. It was close to the highway near Death Valley.
