Overview

This is an extremely darling and quaint dude ranch located in Nathrop, Colorado, close to Buena Vista and Salida in the Collegiate Mountains. The scenery is remarkable year-round with snow against the Chalk Cliffs or a gorgeous summer sunset over Mt. Princeton. Resort accommodations include both lodge and cabins. There are simple lodge rooms in “old west” style of lodging. There is a front desk in a separate building and gift shop. The ranch notes that you can “smell Jess’s cinnamon rolls from your room, walk down in your stocking feet for Big Dave’s coffee and the fire early every morning, and let your young ones sleep during breakfast if you wish,” now that’s family accommodations!
There are two, three or four bedroom vacation cottages (small homes, actually). Each mountain vacation cabin has a fully-equipped kitchen, living room/dining area, fireplace and deck with a view. The cabins are great for families of four or more. No two cabins are alike and they vary as to the number of bedrooms, bathrooms and size of beds.
There are all-inclusive and a la carte rates at Deer Valley Ranch. For the all-inclusive program, the following are part of the package: children’s program, teen program, guided hiking, guided fishing, nightly entertainment as well as ranch amenities such as two hot springs fed swimming pools, two outdoor hot tubs, athletic courts, children’s play town and more. For people staying less than seven nights, please understand that some activities are only offered once a week and may not be offered during the days you are at the ranch.

The cabin, the property, and location are really nice. I'd like to go back but won't. We booked off season and did expect the possibility of limited services. A few days before we left from MO, we got a letter explaining that the equestrian activities were completely shut down. It said to check in at 4pm but there was no one in the office. We learned from a resident that they had no one at all, except for maintenance support, on site. The contents of the trash can behind the cabin had been scattered probably by a bear. The pool and hot tub were open but the 'hot' tub wasn't heated. The only internet service available was at the office. In this day, that service really is expected. Since the office was closed, we had to sit on the front porch of the office to access the wifi. To top it off, we a had death in the family and needed to leave a day early. They weren't willing to refund because their 'off season' policy was no refunds after check-in. I am generally understanding when things go bad if the business seems to be concerned about their customer. This was quite possibly my worst experience with a resort of any type. I gave two stars based only on the cabin, the property, and location.

I was just at Deer Valley Ranch last week, and it was a wonderful experience! They offered many activities such as mountain biking, hiking, rock repelling, horseback riding, and whitewater rafting! It is located at the base of chalk cliffs so the views are picturesque! All of meals are included, and although they weren't the healthiest options, they were home-cooked and delicious! Our cabin "Tincup" was a lot bigger than we expected with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and it had a western feel to it. It was surprisingly nice to unplug from our phones (there limited/no service), to really enjoy the natural beauty. Overall, we had an amazing experience at Deer Valley Ranch! We definitely will always remember our experience!
