Young State Park’s shortest trail, the White Birch Nature Trail, is perfect for families with younger kids. The first half of the 1.5-mile loop hugs Lake Charlevoix, providing easy access to the water and pretty views of Boyne City and Avalanche Peak rising above the west shore. At the half mile mark, kids and parents can cool off in the water following a very short path down to the lake.
The trail is closed to mountain bikes and the walk is short, level and usually dry even in the spring.
Hours and admission: The park is open year round, offering Nordic skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. A vehicle permit or annual state park pass is required to enter.
