Located in a two-story building in the island’s interior, the Women’s Beading Collective is a good place to shop for purses and jewelry made from glass beads, shells and semi-precious stones and pearls. The work here is done by roughly 60 island women, many of whom you can see perfecting their craft onsite. Designs that reflect Mayan heritage are particularly pretty. And a percentage of the proceeds goes directly to the women designers to pay for food, housing and school fees for their kids, with the remaining earnings going back to the cooperative to pay for supplies.
