You need to get to Tokyo soon to see this legendary fish market in its current locale — it moves to new suburban digs by 2017. With children in tow, it’s best to skip the tuna auction, which requires a 4 a.m. wakeup call and a lot of patience to watch the sushi chefs bid for the best catch. But there’s still plenty of action if you arrive at 9 a.m., when you can watch the fishmongers zip around on their carts and view various exotic creatures of the sea, both live and — ahem — recently deceased.

After you’ve had your fill of ogling the wares, grab a bite of the freshest sushi ever from one of the many restaurants in and around the market, or pick up cool knives, tools, and ingredients at the shops in the area.

Hours
The tuna auction starts at 5:30 a.m., but in order to be one of the few who get to witness it, you’ll need to be there at 4 a.m. The market closes around 11 a.m.
