It may not be the Austrian Alps, but the von Trapp Family has done their best to turn the hills of Stowe, Vermont into their own outdoor wonderland. Straight from the events in the Sound of Music, the family opened a guest lodge here, and have been expanding on it ever since. Now the outdoor center sits on 2,500 acres of trails groomed for hiking and mountain biking in the summer and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. A good 60km of trails are well-marked and maintained, with an additional 100km of secluded backcountry trails. In addition to skis and other gear, the center rents out ski-trailers so you can take even young children out with you on the trails.
