One of the most impressive state capitol buildings in the country, the Texas Capitol is a late 19th century design and on the register of Historic Places and a National Historic Landmark. An extension was completed in 1993, at the tune of $75 million. The Texas Capitol offers a visitor center, which was built in the mid-1800s and is the oldest state office building in the state. Originally housing the General Land Office, the building underwent renovations in 1989 and is a three-story castle-like structure. Visitors are welcome Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free and self-guided tours and literature are available. Tours of the Texas Capitol are guided and last 45 minutes. They take place Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., although the Capitol and Extension are open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.
