While your children may not yet know who Sir Walter Scott was — or even care — they will enjoy climbing the monument that stands with its notable spires. Located in the Princes Street Gardens, the monument climb is 287 steps to the top, with stopping points for viewing Edinburgh (although I preferred the views of the intricately carved, blackened spires up close). Near the monument in the garden is also the Floral Clock, made up entirely of flowers, on display in the summer months.
