Want to introduce the kids to the sport of Thoroughbred racing in small, friendly doses? Rise early and take them to the track for breakfast. Bring your own or choose the buffet option, then sit in the boxes and watch the horses work out. If you want to get a look behind the scenes, you can take a free 45-minute tram tour, where the kids can pet a horse, walk amidst the barns, see what a farrier does and learn about life on the Backstretch. A fun and economical way to spend the day is to pack a picnic (bring a cooler), then claim a table in the “Back Yard,” a free family-friendly area where vendors set up shop. Arrive early (gates open at 7 a.m.) to get your pick, then return later when the races begin, when you can watch one or two contests and call it a day when the kids get antsy. The track is open to spectators from July 19 to Labor Day.
