Many visitors to Dublin make a pilgrimage to this church, located near where a rumored well once stood and Saint Patrick himself baptized converts to Christianity. A church has sat at this location since the 5th century, although the Normans first built a church here in 1191. The cathedral now remaining was built in the 1300s, its spire added in 1749, and a visit will have you roaming the stone floors where Jonathan Swift served as dean and Handel’s “Messiah” was first performed in Dublin. The church is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with some variations on closing on weekends due to seasons. Services are also held daily.
