Attraction

The Royal Mews Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace Road, London, SW1W 1QH

These cars, carriages, and horses will appeal to everyone from tots to teens, not to mention parents who want a gander at a Rolls-Royce Phantom VI (Princess Kate’s ride to Westminster Abbey on her wedding day). Self-guided audio tours offer interesting tidbits as you view all things Royal Family transport, from the Gold State coach used for every coronation since George IV in 1821, to the fully-loaded Australian Coach-a carriage with central heating and electric windows. You’ll also learn why the Windsor Grey and Cleveland Bay breeds were chosen to pull the carriages, and about the families that tend the horses and live at the Royal Mews. Kids age 7 to 11 have their own audio tour, told by “Alex,” a boy brought up at the Mews. Littler ones can partake in artsy activities at the Learning Center.

Open daily March 30 to October 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (guided tours also available these months). Open Monday through Saturday until 4 p.m., February 1 to March 29, and November. Note: Closed during state visits and royal events. Check The Royal Mews Web site for dates and tickets, or buy them onsite and enjoy free re-admission for a year (ask for a stamp). Children under age 5 are free, and family rates are available.
