Providence Athenaeum Library

251 Benefit Street, Providence, 02903, RI

The historic Providence Athenaeum Library dates back to the 1800’s and families will enjoy exploring its old and new sections. The bookcases are old, but intricately designed and they house a variety of books, some of which also date back to the 1800’s. Upon entering the library, families can pick up a pamphlet and take a self-guided tour to learn more about the various areas of the library. The newer children’s area is on the first floor and is home to games, books and movies, as well as family-friendly events, such as movie nights and story hours. There is a second floor, with historic books, but it not open to children under the age of 10.

Admission to the library is free. The Athenaeum is open September through May, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. From June 1 to June 21, the library shortens its hours on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and it is closed on Sunday. During the rest of the summer, from June 21 to Labor Day, the library shortens its Monday through Thursday hours, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The library is closed on all major holidays.
