Philadelphia Museum of Art

26th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, 19130 , PA

One of the largest art museums in the United States, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is a must-see attraction for families visiting the City of Brotherly Love. Inside the beautiful buildings that comprise the museum, visitors will find nearly 230,000 pieces of art — including paintings, sculptures, photography, architectural settings, decorative arts and textiles — separated into more than 200 galleries.

The massive collection spans multiple millennia, the earliest work being from the third millennium BC (from Asia). You’ll find works celebrating the earliest creative achievements from the Western world (dating back to the first century AD), and European works dating back to the Medieval era. The vast assortment of armor and arms is the second largest in the United States. The section on American art spans several genres and ranges in everything from contemporary to modern, featuring artists like Andy Warhol, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Steve McCurry and Georgia O’Keeffe.

The museum also presents visitors with over 25 unique and interesting exhibitions each year, which vary in size and depth, and change constantly. They span several genres and time periods; some may focus on single artists, while others on specific genres or eras.

Taking the sheer amount of pieces on display into consideration, we suggest turning this into an all day trip. Everyone is bound to find something they love. And if not, at least you’ll be able to re-enact the now-iconic climb up the museum’s main steps steps, as done by Sylvester Stallone in the 1976 film, Rocky!

Also, on the first Sunday of the month and every Wednesday after 5 p.m., admission is free (but donations are encouraged!).
