Family Activities:

Pacaya Volcano

Attraction

It’s easy, they said. No problem, they said. Hiking Pacaya is not easy, but it’s worth it. One must consider the elevation and one’s lack of fitness when ascending a volcano. Good thing there are lots of horses with guides ready and eager to have you cave in and hop on-for $28 per person (worth every penny).

Whether your family walks or rides, the views are sensational, and the experience is exceptional. Bring snacks and water, or maybe even a packed lunch because you will be hungry. A high point is hiking down into the crater (the last major eruption was in 2010) and crunching around the black volcanic rock. Many people roast marshmallows (provided by some tour operators) in the steaming heat vent. Don’t forget to check out the “lava store,” a shack in the crater filled with lava earrings, necklaces and the like.

A variety of day trips can be booked out of Antigua and range in price from $15 to $99 (including lunch and a trip to the hot springs) and include the 1.5-hour trip from Antigua to the base of the volcano.
