Every school kid knows the phrase “one if by land, two if by sea”; now visit the historic church, and its even more historic steeple, where Paul Revere hung the lanterns that fabled night when the British marched out to begin the American Revolution in earnest. (For the record, it was two, since the soldiers began their march by rowing across the harbor to Charlestown.) Built in 1723 in classic Georgian style, the church is still home to an active congregation, in addition to being open to visitors interested in its historical significance. Every half hour, tour guides tell the story of Paul Revere and sexton Robert Newman, the unheralded hero who actually hung the lanterns, and was arrested by the British soon after.
