There’s no better place in town to see boats in the harbor than from the historic fishing pier in Newport. You’ll also see noisy sea lions basking on the docks, local fishermen tending to their crab pots, and a close-up view of the Yaquina Bay Bridge, which towers over the free public pier. It’s a great place to people watch, or just to get a feel for the area. The pier extends far out into the bay, and is a fun and safe way to get out onto the water. Kids will love watching the crabbers pull up their traps. Most fishermen are friendly and patient, and don’t mind talking about their catch.
Leave your fishing poles at home, however, as you have a better chance of catching an abandoned crab trap than an actual fish.
