Montauk Point Lighthouse and Museum

2000 Montauk Highway, Montauk, 11954, NY

The Montauk Point Lighthouse is located at the eastern-most tip of the Hamptons. The grounds alone offer families beautiful views for free — the Atlantic Ocean surrounds the area. Park your vehicle in the lot (free after 4 p.m.) and walk around the area before making your way to the lighthouse entrance. Enter the gated area and walk up to the building where you can explore the various rooms, which offer insight into the history of the lighthouse. George Washington helped secure the area for its development and once it was erected in 1796, this lighthouse became the first lighthouse in New York State and is now the fourth oldest lighthouse in the United States.

Families can climb the 137 iron steps to the top for grand views. Children must be at least 41 inches tall to climb. You can’t go all the way to the top where the light is, but once at the top landing, you can stand outside in a small area and snap a photo.

When you’ve made your way down, explore the rest of the grounds and let the kids run around. There is a gift shop back near the entrance to the area where you can pick up souvenirs for friends and families. And if you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the Lighthouse Grill for a snack, located near the parking area.

Dates and Hours: The Montauk Point Lighthouse is open year-round, with dates and hours varying according to season. However, hours tend to be 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Guests are required to arrive at the lighthouse approximately one-hour before closing in order to climb the tower.

Admission: Admission is $9 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under.
