Leading to Sandstone Peak, the highest in the Santa Monica Mountains, Mishe Mokwa is a 6-mile loop sure to appeal to dedicated hikers. While the trek isn’t as clearly marked toward the peak, the elevation gain is gradual and even young kids have been able to make the journey. There are a number of different paths clearly marked for those who want to take a quicker hike. The whole family can watch for hawks flying overhead, as well as lizards and even foxes at spots like Split Rock and Balancing Rock.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to sign the summit register at Sandstone Peak. The Circle X Ranch is the ranger station, and a spot at the campgrounds next to it can be reserved in advance.
