Perhaps one of the most famous and oft-visited sites in Salzburg is Mirabell Palace and Gardens. Made famous in “The Sound of Music,” the palace and gardens were given to Salome Alt, the archbishop’s love, in 1609 and originally named for her as Schloss Altenau. The baroque gardens were opened to the public in 1854 and is now one of the most photographed sights in all of the city. The gardens feature fountains with oversized statues, a rose garden, an orangery and a hedge theater.
