These vast sand dunes are one of Death Valley’s highlights. Hike out to the taller dunes to get a cool view, but plan to go at sunrise or sunset to miss the worst of the sun and heat (there’s no shade to be found). Make sure you wear decent walking shoes; although the dunes are fairly solid and you won’t be sinking into the sand with every step, you’ll still slip and slide in sandals. Of course, sunscreen and water are also a must.
