Machu Picchu

Attraction

Visiting the Lost City of the Incas is high on any traveler’s bucket list. And Machu Picchu is also a very high place, perched at an altitude of 7,972 feet in the Andes and hardly stroller-friendly. Most people opt to acclimatize for a few days in Cusco, which is even higher, then make the roughly four-hour train ride to Aguas Calientes, the gateway town for Machu Picchu tours.

You can pre-book tours with most hotels, or else buy tickets directly from the ticket office in town. Hours and admission vary, and recently instituted new rules to cut down on traffic to the wildly popular attraction insist visitors enter with a guide and choose between a morning or afternoon visit (no staying here all day, like before).

Hours
Visits can be scheduled from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.

Admission
Pricing varies with packages and guides; check with your hotel.
