Rent a boat or kayak at Robbie’s Marina and head to Indian Key State Historic Site. The island’s story is quite interesting, and goes something like this: A man named John Housemen bought the island in 1831, and started a shipwrecking business and small federation, with a hotel, warehouse, store and homes for approximately 50 people. In 1840, Indians attacked the island, killing several residents and forcing others to flee.
Today, you can explore the former settlement, as well as swim, snorkel, fish and enjoy a picnic lunch.
