George Eastman was a pioneer and entrepreneur in making photography and cameras more easily accessible to all. He founded the use of roll film and enhanced the camera design to use roll film. In 1892, he went on to establish the Eastman Kodak Company. The museum, located on Eastman’s estate, is actually a variety of museums in one. It is the world’s oldest photography museum and has one of the oldest film archives.
Families who are into photography can view the photo collections and see a variety of collections. Film series’ and screenings are always taking place in the museum’s Dryden Theatre.
George Eastman’s mansion and gardens are fabulous to explore as well. The elegantly grand mansion shows how Eastman lived in the early 1900s. Families can explore the many rooms like the dining room, conservatory and great hall on their own or take a guided tour, which is offered daily. There is a children’s play area inside the mansion, which allows for kids to do hands-on activities related to photography and film. The gardens, open from May through September, offer their own much needed self or guided tours of flowers, ponds and greenery. Summertime concerts are often taking place in the Eastman gardens as well.
