This 640-acre environmental and recreation center focuses on one of Manitoba’s biggest animals, the bison, which live on a 70-acre prairie within Fort Whyte. Families can hop inside the tour van for a narrated drive to the prairie, where they will learn all about bison and the herd. Once you arrive at the more than 30-head of bison herd, there is plenty of time to get up and take photos no matter where you sit. The van will turn and open the door so all photo angles can be taken. But in order to keep people and the bison safe, visitors must stay inside the van during the journey.
After checking out the bison (which are different from buffalo), visit Prairie Dog Town, where the cute little guys like to sneak out of their ground holes and eat the grass. Families will also love the lakes, hiking trails, family tree house, bird feeding stations, interpretive center and touch museum at Fort Whyte Alive.
